Google Alerts alternative: see what alerts miss

Google Alerts is enough to hear about new pages that use your name. It does not show what buyers see when they search you: the results for “your name scam”, negative suggestions, ratings, or AI answers.

When Google Alerts is the right choice

If you only want to know when a new page uses your name, or you follow a topic rather than a business, Google Alerts is free and does the job. Keep it.

When it is not enough

Most reputation damage is not a new page. It is a complaint that already ranks for “your name reviews”, a suggestion like “your name scam” that every searcher sees, or an AI answer that repeats an old story. Alerts does not look at any of these.

What Google Alerts does well

Google Alerts sends you an email when “new results for a topic show up in Google Search”, in Google’s own words. You choose how often you get notifications, the types of sites, the language, the region, how many results you want and which account gets them. It costs nothing and takes a minute to set up.

For a business name, two settings make it more useful: put the name in quotes so you do not get every page with one of the words, and add a second alert for the name with your town or website domain if the name is common.

What it does not look at

Alerts answers one question: did a new page with these words appear? Reputation usually turns on other questions.

  • What already ranks. A complaint thread from 2023 that sits third for “your name reviews” is not new, so Alerts will never mention it. Every buyer who checks you still reads it.
  • Search suggestions. “Your name scam” under the search box is not a page. Alerts does not see it.
  • Ratings. A Yelp or Google Maps rating that drops from 4.6 to 3.9 in a week is not a new page either.
  • AI answers. The Google AI Overview for your name, or what ChatGPT says about you, is outside Alerts.
  • How much it matters. Alerts has no tone or risk. A directory listing and a fraud accusation arrive in the same format.

Use both

Keep Google Alerts for news about your name; it is free and it is good at that. Add WhatsMyRep for the part Alerts cannot see: what a buyer meets when they search you today, scored by risk, checked every day. The free check shows you the gap in about 2-3 minutes. Our guide What Google Alerts does not show you goes through the gaps one by one.

Questions, answered

Is WhatsMyRep a replacement for Google Alerts?

It covers a different question. Alerts tells you about new pages; WhatsMyRep shows what people already see when they look you up, plus suggestions, ratings and AI answers. Many people use both.

Is there a free Google Alerts alternative?

Talkwalker Alerts is free and covers news, blogs, forums, websites and X. Like Google Alerts, it reports new mentions, not what already ranks for your name. The WhatsMyRep check is free once, without an account.

How much does WhatsMyRep cost?

The one-off check is free. Daily monitoring: Starter $29 for 1 business, Growth $79 for 5, Agency $149 for 15, a month each, after a 14-day trial without a card. Nothing renews by itself.

Do I need an account for the free check?

No. An account is needed only for daily monitoring, and it starts with a 14-day trial.
